Eri Handa began her career as a manicurist in Japan. As with the arts in Japanese tradition, she developed the ability to balance precision with expression. After building up a solid foundation in rigorous Tokyo nail studios, she moved to Los Angeles to hone her skills, working in leading salons in Beverly Hills.
After five years in Los Angeles, she moved to New York City to take her craft to the next level and pursue a career in high fashion. She developed a close relationship with the manicure star Yuna Park and became her lead assistant, doing a range of shows including Calvin Klein, Balenciaga, Givenchy and Victoria Secret. Eri developed a passion for fashion and enhanced her collaborative skills while exploring her art.
While cultivating her craft, Eri developed a unique perspective, taking a holistic view of hands and nails with respect to the entire photographic image. She starts with the shape of the model’s nails, extends the lines to the hand, and looks to create an impression that works with the overall image.
She has extended her art to go beyond color or graphic effect in isolation and has pursued the idea of creating a seamless connection that makes the hands and nails an extension of the look.
Eri’s editorial clients include Interview, Vogue, W, Harper’s Bazaar, Vs, Heroine, Muse, i-D, Document, Mixte and Purple.
Her photographers include Chris Colls, Dario Catellani , Dominick Sheldon, Ellen Von Unwerth, Emma Summerton, Fabien Baron, Gordon Von Steiner, Hunter and Gatti, Julia Noni, Lea Colombo, Michelangelo di Battista, Philippe Jarrigeon, Robbie Fimmano, Stas Komarovski, Vincent Peters, Ward Ivan Rafik and Yelena Yemchuk.
Eri joined MAM during the fall of 2012.
